Tenancy WA is the specialist community legal centre for tenants, dedicated to protecting the right to housing for all tenants through advocacy, advice and education.  We are the central resource unit supporting Tenant Advocates across WA and we provide a state-wide advice line for tenants.  We are a young dynamic organisation, successfully growing to deliver new and innovative programs.

Safe as Houses is a new program managed by Tenancy WA in collaboration with the Women's Law and Street Law Centres that aims to prevent homelessness for women and children affected by family and domestic violence.Through an integrated case management approach, we provide holistic legal and support services to untangle complex issues.

About the Role

Tenancy WA is looking for an experienced (3-5 years') lawyer to oversee the Safe as Houses program as well as supervising the legal advice line.  Importantly TWA is seeking an energetic, confident individual who enjoys a challenge and is interested in making a significant difference to the lives of the people we work with.

The successful applicant will:

  • Provide legal advice, negotiation and representation in the Magistrates Court proceedings for clients with tenancy matters attached to the SasH program.
  • Supervise the advice line by answering queries from staff and checking and signing off advice provided by solicitors (restricted practitioners), tenant advocates, volunteers and students.
  • Contribute to the development of Community Legal Education resources for tenants and community workers as well as to the development of specialised legal resources for tenant advocates and legal practitioners.
  • Coordinate the Piddington Justice Project, including recruitment and supervision of law graduates.
